Intra-Regional Amenities, Wages, and Home Prices: The Role of Forests in the Southwest

چکیده
Forests provide non-market goods and services that people are implicitly willing to pay for through hedonic housing and labor markets. But it is unclear if compensating differentials arise in these markets at the regional level. This empirical question is addressed in a study of Arizona and New Mexico. Hedonic regressions of housing prices and wages using census and geographic data show that forest area carries an implicit price of between $27 and $36 per square mile annually. Compensating differentials at the regional level suggest that care must be taken when applying the travel cost method to value regionally delineated characteristics. (JEL Q23, R14)

On the role of amenities in models of migration and regional development.
"The role of location-specific amenities in human migration decisions, and subsequently regional development, is explored. A framework is developed which motivates a new assessment of existing alternative models of regional development, indicating the need for additional modeling efforts which focus upon amenities as critical elements in such analyses. The approach hinges upon the notion that...
متن کاملImplicit Amenity Prices and the Location of Retirees in England and Wales
General equilibrium models in which compensation for local amenities occurs in both housing and labour markets have been widely used to generate implicit amenity prices and regional quality of life indices. An implication and prospective test of such models is that individuals who are outside the labour market have an incentive to locate in regions where amenities are capitalised into wages. In...
متن کاملConsumption Amenities and City Population Density
Population density varies widely among U.S. metro areas. A simple, static general equilibrium model demonstrates that moderate differences in metro areas’ consumption amenities can cause extremely large differences in their population density. Such amenities are more strongly capitalized into housing prices than into wages. Empirical results suggest that amenities do indeed help to support high...
متن کاملAdjusting Poverty Thresholds When Area Prices Differ: Labor Market Evidence
Overview The decision whether and how to adjust poverty thresholds for area differences in prices depends, among other things, on the reasons that prices differ across metropolitan areas and what one believes a threshold ought to measure. 1 If one starts with the premise that a poverty threshold ought to provide the same purchasing power across markets; that is, enable one to buy the same bundl...
متن کاملThe Role of Local Amenities in the National Economy
Consumers value nonmarket amenities such as climate, public goods, infrastructure, and pollution. They pay for these localized amenities indirectly, through spatial variation in housing prices and wages. In this paper, we develop a macroeconomic measure of indirect amenity expenditures that is consistent with microeconomic fundamentals of spatial equilibrium and principles of national income ac...
